Get the Stream Off Wi-Fi Where You Can
If you only do one thing on this list, do this one. Wireless is convenient and it is also the single most common source of instability in a home streaming setup, because it shares the airwaves with your neighbors, your microwave and every other device in the house.
A cable beats every wireless upgrade
A direct Ethernet run from router to streaming device removes interference, removes distance loss and removes competition from other wireless clients in one move. Modern televisions and set-top boxes almost all have an Ethernet port on the back.
Streaming sticks can go wired too
Small streaming sticks have no Ethernet port, which people take to mean they must use Wi-Fi. Most manufacturers sell a powered Ethernet adapter that replaces the standard power supply and adds a network socket. It costs very little and it is frequently the difference between a stable evening and a frustrating one.
When you genuinely cannot run a cable
- Powerline adapters send network traffic through the mains wiring. Performance depends heavily on your house wiring, so buy from somewhere with a return policy and test before committing.
- MoCA adapters use existing coaxial television cabling and are usually more stable than powerline where coax outlets already exist.

Router interfaces are full of options, most of which will not affect your streaming at all. Four of them will.
Update the firmware first
Look under Administration, System or Management for a firmware section. Routers that have been running the same firmware for three or four years frequently carry known stability bugs that were fixed long ago. Do this before you spend an hour tuning anything else, because a firmware update can reset your other changes.
Separate the two Wi-Fi bands
Many routers broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under a single network name and decide for you which one each device gets. That decision is often wrong for a television, which does not move and should simply stay on 5 GHz. Giving the bands two distinct names lets you pin the streaming device to the faster one permanently.
Turn on QoS for the streaming device
Quality of Service lets you tell the router which device wins when the connection is under pressure. Find it under Advanced, Traffic Control or QoS, enable it, and give the television or set-top box the highest priority. It will not create bandwidth that does not exist, but it stops a large download elsewhere in the house from crowding out live video.
Change the DNS if channels are slow to open
A stream that plays perfectly once it starts, but takes several seconds to load each time you change channel, often points at name resolution rather than bandwidth. Swapping the DNS server your router hands out is a two-minute change with no downside worth worrying about.
